Eri or 'Peace' silk comes from the caterpillar of Samia cynthia ricini, found in northeast India and some parts of China, Japan, and Thailand. The name "eri" is derived from the Assamese word "era", which means "castor", as the silkworm feeds on castor plants. The cultivation and weaving of this silk is an integral part of the life and culture of the people of North East India especially in the state of Assam. Eri silk is processed without killing the silk worm as they spin a cocoon which is open at one end, enabling the moth to develope fully and emerge.
