Dyeing with Cochineal gives you rich reds, scarlets and crimsons. If you overdye with Indigo you will get violets and purples. The colour additive cochineal extract is the concentrated solution obtained after removing the alcohol from an aqueous-alcoholic extract of cochineal (Dactylopius coccus costa (Coccus cacti L.)). The colouring principle is chiefly carminic acid. This is high quality Cochineal Extract powder (52% dye content). Use only .5 to 2% of this powder per Weight Of Fibre (WOF)( 2gms per 100gms fibre) for medium shades. Use alum mordant at 15% WOF for protein fibres. Mordant with tannin at 8% WOF and then alum at 15% for cellulose fibres. For really good bright mid reds overdye with Madder.  *** Please note Cochineal Extract does not give you the same shade variations as Cochineal Insects. When we are able (customs permitting) we will restock the Cochineal Insects.
