Mallotus Phillipinses - Kamala Kamala - Gives beautiful Oranges & Gold yellows on Wool and silk. Mordanting with iron gives mossy greens.Mallotus is a genus of the spurge family Euphorbiaceae.2 species are found in tropical Africa and Madagascar. About 140 species are found in East and Southeast Asia and from Indomalaysia to New Caledonia and Fiji, northern and eastern Australia. The dye is taken from the hairs of the seed capsule of the fruit of a plant which is an evergreen tree growing up to 25mtrs high. Kamala is not very soluble in water and needs to be soaked in alchohol for 2 hours to extract the dye. This solution should then be added to the dyebath. You can also extract the dye by mixing it with half its weight of Soda Ash and twice the amount of water. Allow it to sit for 2 hours and again add this solution to the dyebath.Used in India and neighbouring countries.Use alum mordant at 15% WOF for protein fibres. Mordant with tannin at 8% WOF and then alum at 15% for cellulose fibres.
